Faces of Margao Market: The Man Behind a 1939 Motorcycle Workshop

Meet Subash Lotlikar, the proud custodian of a family-run motorcycle repair shop with a history stretching back to 1939. Opened by his father, this small workshop has quietly witnessed generations pass through the bustling streets of Margao, Goa.

I met Subash during a photowalk through Margao Market. What first caught my eye was the shop’s distinctive façade—weathered, characterful, and full of texture. I lifted my camera to take a quick frame from outside, and that’s when Subash noticed me.

He approached with a warm curiosity and an eagerness to share the story behind the shop. As he spoke, it was impossible not to sense his pride—pride in his father’s legacy, in the craft, and in keeping this place alive for nearly a century. When I asked if I could take his portrait, he happily agreed, positioning himself perfectly between the arches of the workshop that has defined so much of his life.

It’s a beautiful little shop—rich with colour, layered with history, and full of natural contrast. More than just a repair space, it’s a living piece of Margao’s heritage, and meeting Subash made photographing it all the more meaningful.
